NYHRC: New York Health and Racquet Club
We joined the New York Health and Racquet Club on Wednesday, 27 June 2007 with 23 Street location as our primary club.
I never thought that choosing the right fitness club would be such an interesting journey. NYSC (New York Sports Club) was the first club I called. It was the 14th street location. My first real question to the lady on the phone was:
"I am not interested in signing a contract at this point. What will be your monthly charges for me and my spouse to join on a month to month basis?"
The answer I got was, "Sir, I am not allowed to tell the prices we charge on the phone. This is our policy. You'll have to come and talk to our consultant if you want to know the cost."
So I went to NYSC on 14th street.
A sign on the door reads, "$0 to join." So far so good.
I was greeted by the "consultant" who just won't tell me the price right away. He made me listen to his speech, fill out a card, ask what I would like to feel. Then he insisted on giving me a walk around the club. Finally, he told me:
$149 / person sign up fee (only today there's a special for $32 / person)
$49 / person processing fee
$89 / month for "Passport" membership or
$79 / month for "regular membership"
Upon asking, I was told there is a one year minimum commitment or a $50 cancellation fee. I expressed my desire for no commitment. The consultant presented me with tips on how I can avoid the cancellation fee since the company "wouldn't really know."
The whole thing was starting to feel like a way to nickle and dime me. I was very disappointed and walked out.
I checked out other gyms but finally settled with NYHRC at 23rd street.
$119 / month / member
$250 / year / locker
$210 / year laundry service (yes, I got it so I won't have any excuse for not working out and will always have clean work out clothes ready).
Today, me and my wife went for swimming during my lunch hour. It was a short but very good workout. I am feeling completely out of shape so I am planning to go regularly. On my way back to office, I ended up grabbing a lamb gyro.
BTW, it will be cool to connect with you if you work out or swim there.
